Athletics Auckland Championships

Athletics Auckland, the Regional Sporting Organisation charged with the development and promotion of athletics in Auckland, and Auckland based event organizer, Running Events, have teamed up to host the 2016 and 2017 Athletics Auckland Half Marathon Championships.

The 2016 Athletics Auckland Half Marathon Championships will be held on September 25th, 2016, in conjunction with the Mizuno Devonport Half Marathon. The half marathon championships will have medals for the Open and masters (5 year age groups) Grades. The defending champions are Alex Parlane (Wesley) and Lisa Robertson (Pakuranga).

Affiliated athletes who would like to compete in the 2016 championships are eligible for discounted race entry and must record their AAI membership number during the registration process.

The Devonport Half Marathon is one of the premier running events on the North Shore and up to 2,000 participants are expected for the 2016 edition, 50% of whom are expected to take on the inaugural half marathon. The unique and challenging course takes athletes on an extended single lap loop of the Devonport Peninsula and features landmarks such as Stanley Point, Narrow Neck Beach and North Head. A feature of the half marathon course is an extended section on the traffic free “Green Route” utility trail around Shoal Bay.

Looking further ahead, the 2017 Athletics Auckland Half Marathon Championships will be hosted by the Mizuno Coatesville Half Marathon on March 19th, 2017. The scenic rural event will be held on closed roads on an AIMS certified course.

Both the Devonport and Coatesville events are part of the inaugural Garmin Auckland Half Marathon Series. The series includes four events – the others are the Omaha Half Marathon on December 4th, 2016 and the Orewa Beach Half Marathon on April 23rd, 2017. Participants in the series accumulate points towards series awards to be presented at the final event in Orewa.
